CJ Torkonoo’s removal process a playbook, petitioners were coached — Ex-NPP Minister

Former Eastern Regional Minister under the immediate past New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, Seth Acheampong, has described the ongoing process to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkonoo as a coordinated political script.

According to him, the entire procedure surrounding the petitions appears rehearsed, with petitioners seemingly coached on what to write, suggesting a deliberate orchestration by the current government.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily programme on Thursday, June 26, the NPP stalwart warned that the precedent being set could come back to haunt the ruling party when power eventually changes hands.

“This is the playbook for me. Nobody can change my mind about that. It has been rehearsed. The people who wrote the petitions were coached, and that’s why I said, I pray to God that we are all alive in this country going forward,” Acheampong said.

He added, “I know this democracy will not stay in one area for the rest of the years in this country. It will go; the pendulum will shift and come to the other side. If we are setting a precedent today and people become victims of it tomorrow, I pray nobody goes to stand on the rooftop to shout that they are doing something which is bad.”

Justice Torkonoo is currently facing a committee inquiry over three separate petitions seeking her removal from office.

She has, however, maintained that the allegations contained in the petitions are either outright lies or misguided opinions about her conduct in office.
