Former Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, says the Council of State is largely biased in favour of President John Dramani Mahama in the ongoing process to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking at the #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo on Monday, May 5, Dr. Okoe-Boye claimed that the composition of the Council of State makes it difficult to trust the fairness of its advice to the President.
“The Council of State is 80% biased in favour of the sitting President. Most of them were appointed by him, so even unconsciously, there’s internal bias,” the former Ledzokuku MP said.
He also questioned the neutrality of the five-member committee set up to probe the Chief Justice following her suspension on April 22, describing the process as dangerous and politically motivated.
“It’s no surprise they established a prima facie case. And the committee to sit on the matter was also appointed by the same President, who has openly stated that ‘reset must start with the Chief Justice,’” Dr. Okoe-Boye stated.
The former MP warned that Ghana’s democracy will be in grave danger if the Chief Justice is removed because it would give President Mahama full control over all arms of government.
“If Mahama succeeds in removing the Chief Justice, Ghana will be unsafe. There will be survival of the fittest. The only thing that makes a country, a country and not a jungle is the courts,” he said.
Dr. Okoe-Boye called on the President to immediately reverse the Chief Justice’s suspension and allow the judiciary to remain independent.
