The National Labour Commission (NLC) has successfully obtained an interlocutory injunction to stop the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
Following the commission’s declaration that the strike is illegal, the High Court’s Industrial and Labour Division in Accra granted the injunction on June 5, 2025, immediately barring the association and its members from continuing their industrial action.
Justice Priscilla Dikro Ofori presided over the case and ruled in favor of the NLC after an ex-parte motion. The court ordered the GRNMA, including its executives and members, to end the strike without delay. The injunction will be in place for ten days, after which the NLC may seek further legal measures by formally notifying the association.
The GRNMA initiated the strike to protest the delayed implementation of their 2024 Collective Agreement, which covers critical issues such as unpaid allowances and postponed staff postings. The industrial action severely disrupted healthcare services across the country, with nurses withdrawing from outpatient and emergency care, causing hospitals to struggle under the increased pressure.
This legal development marks a temporary halt to the strike as stakeholders await the next steps in resolving the dispute.
