Evans Kyei, the Eastern Regional Organizer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP)As the global economy becomes increasingly digital, prioritizing digitization is essential to achieving President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to “Reset Ghana” and revamp the nation’s economy.
This perspective was shared by Mr. Evans Kyei, the Eastern Regional Organizer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), in an exclusive interview.
Mr. Kyei expressed concern that despite 68 years of independence, Ghana’s economy has struggled due to a lack of policies that drive substantial progress. He emphasized the visionary efforts of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who laid the groundwork for national development through digitization.
However, following Nkrumah’s overthrow, these foundational policies—which contributed to significant achievements like the Akosombo Dam, universities, and textile industries—were not adequately built upon, resulting in stalled development.
As an Information Technology expert and Managing Director of Multiminds Technologies Co. Ltd in Kumasi, Mr. Kyei stressed that the economic success of developed nations is driven by their embrace of technology. He argued that Ghana must adopt a similar approach to fulfill President Mahama’s ambitious “Reset Ghana” agenda.
A Call for Strategic Digitization
To effectively integrate digitization into the “Reset Ghana” agenda, Mr. Kyei proposed a strategic partnership between the government and private ICT organizations and individuals. He believes their expertise is crucial in advising on how digitization can positively transform Ghana’s economy.
Furthermore, he advocated for making ICT a compulsory subject in all public and private schools from the primary to university level. Drawing comparisons to China’s development, Kyei noted that the country’s success is rooted in early technology education, ensuring a highly skilled workforce by the time students reach secondary school.
“Today, no country can see development without the introduction of effective ICT practices in its economy,” Kyei asserted. He added that prioritizing digitization would allow Ghana to leverage technology for economic transformation and wealth creation.
ICT Professionals Echo the Call for Technology-Driven Growth
Supporting Mr. Kyei’s stance, Mr. Kyeremeh Yeboah, a Kumasi-based ICT professional and Chief Executive Officer of ICL Computer Systems Ltd, emphasized that Ghana’s economy could see significant improvement by embracing technology and encouraging students to pursue it.
Mr. Yeboah believes Ghana has the potential to unlock substantial economic growth but has been held back by inaction. He expressed optimism that the government’s “Reset” policy will focus on digitization, ensuring a meaningful transformation that harnesses technology for sustainable national development.
