The National Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has called on the John Dramani Mahama-led administration to abandon its much-publicised 24-hour economy policy.
He described the policy as a deceptive strategy aimed solely at winning votes, lacking the necessary planning for effective implementation.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, July 1, Mr. Ahiagbah urged the government to rather continue the NPP’s flagship One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative, which he said offers practical solutions to Ghana’s production and employment challenges.
“The NPP’s 1D1F is a practicable solution to Ghana’s production and jobs (import and export) challenge.
I pray the government will continue with the 1D1F initiative and discontinue the 24-hour economy deceit,” he wrote.
The 24-hour economy policy is set to be officially launched today, July 1.
According to Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy, Goosie Tanoh, the policy is expected to cost about $4 billion, with government allocating between $300 million and $400 million as seed funding to attract private sector investment.
Reacting to this, Ahiagbah said critical voices, including the media, failed to interrogate the feasibility of the policy when it was proposed by Mr. Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Instead of critically interrogating the promise, the media provided the platform for the NDC to romance the scam into the hearts of Ghanaians.
“Today, the 24-hour economy stands as a failed promise that has been dumped on the respected Goosie Tanoh to seek a soft landing on the back of a staggering $4 billion price tag. What will the $4 billion be spent on?” he quizzed.
