Dismiss health minister Akandoh over week-long GRNMA strike — Ahiagbah tells Mahama

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh over the just-ended strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

The strike, which began on Sunday, June 9, was in protest against government’s failure to implement a Collective Agreement signed with the Ministry of Health in May 2024.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, June 13, shortly before the strike was called off, Ahiagbah expressed concern about the impact on health delivery across the country.

“We have reached a breaking point because private hospitals are overburdened. President Mahama must send the Minister for Health home and hurry the resolution of the impasse… People are dying,” he wrote.

The GRNMA had earlier accused government of dragging its feet on the revised Conditions of Service, leading to widespread disruption in public health facilities.

However, at a press conference in Accra, GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo announced the suspension of the industrial action and directed members to return to work starting Saturday.

She said the decision was taken in good faith to allow space for further negotiations.
