Former Sports Minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuye [L] and Dr Yaw Osei Adu-Twum Former Sports Minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuye [L] and Dr Yaw Osei Adu-Twum

Former Sports Minister and Member of Parliament for Odododiodio Constituency, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has offered candid advice to Dr Yaw Osei Adu-Twum, urging him not to rely solely on his tenure as Minister of Education as justification for his New Patriotic Party(NPP) Flagbearership bid,

Speaking in a media interview on Channel 1 tv, Vanderpuye acknowledged Dr Adu-Twum as a “fine gentleman” known for his calm and respectful demeanor. He expressed admiration for Adu-Twum’s decision to throw his hat into the ring for his party’s flagbearership, describing it as a legitimate aspiration.

However, Vanderpuye cautioned the aspiring flagbearer against using his record at the Education Ministry as the main basis for his candidacy, noting that the performance there was, in his view, mixed.

“His performance at the Ministry is 50/50. There are certain things he did right, but there are a lot of things he did wrong which will not give him the sort of credit he is looking for,” Vanderpuye said.

He advised Adu-Twum to instead present himself to the electorate based on his personal values and commitment to public service.

“He should go out there on his person — Adu-Twum, servant of this country. Say, ‘I have served. I may not have achieved a perfect score, but I have served in humility and respect.’ Then people will look at you from that level, but not just your performance.”

According to Vanderpuye, associating his flagbearer ambitions too closely with his ministerial tenure could expose him to criticism over the government’s performance in education, potentially undermining his campaign.

“If people have any issue about your government or your tenure as Minister of Education, they will use that to discredit you,” he warned.

He concluded by encouraging Adu-Twum to speak directly to the Ghanaian people as an individual with renewed vision and potential.

“When you come forward as you — Adu-Twum, who you are — and say, ‘I think I will perform better if you elect me as flagbearer,’ people will judge you by that.”

Dr Yaw Osei Adu-Twum recently announce his decision to contest the NPP flagbearer position in January 2026.

“I wouldn’t advise Dr. Adutwum to base his flagbearer bid on his performance as Education Minister — there were too many shortcomings.”
