A member of the National Communication Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hamza Suhuyini, has slammed the Minority in Parliament for demanding that the government resolve intermittent power outages within just four months.
At a press conference on Monday, May 19, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs argued that the NDC government has had enough time to fix the country’s power challenges and should stop making excuses.
Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, addressing the media, insisted that five months is enough time for any serious government to act on the erratic power situation.
“It was the same John Jinapor who, as ranking member, kept complaining. Now he is in charge, and nothing has changed,” he said.
“When we were in power, we made sure the lights stayed on. Now, just five months into your term, the lights are going off and on, and your only excuse is that Ghana Water hasn’t paid? You’re in power—fix it,” he added.
However, speaking on Accra-based TV3’s New Day show on Tuesday, May 20, Hamza Suhuyini said he was surprised by the NPP’s demand, noting that the party had presided over the energy sector challenges for eight years.
“The audacity, in less than four months, to begin demanding that an age-long problem they left behind be solved? For eight good years they presided over it, and now they expect us to fix it in four months?” he questioned.
He reiterated that the power challenges were already present before the 2024 elections and had led many Ghanaians to call for a load-shedding timetable.
Responding to claims that the Energy Minister is only complaining instead of fixing the issues, Hamza said the Minister is merely keeping Ghanaians informed, as promised during the NDC’s 2024 campaign.
