Driver of VVIP bus swept away by overflowing River Okye shares harrowing experience

Jonathan Kwateng, the driver of the VVIP bus (registration number GT 8213-23) that was swept away by the overflowing River Okye at Assin Edubease, has shared his terrifying experience in an exclusive interview with Radio Fosu/Adom News.

Recalling the moment, he said it felt like “resurrecting from death,” describing the horror as passengers — including a pregnant woman and children — screamed for help while he was powerless to assist.

The incident occurred after heavy rains caused River Okye to flood its banks.

Thanks to the swift intervention of the fire service, all 63 passengers on board, who were traveling from Winneba to Sefwi Wiawso after a graduation ceremony at UEW’s main campus, were rescued without injury.

The rescued passengers were later provided with another bus to continue their journey early this morning, while a National Road Safety Authority towing vehicle has been called in to recover the submerged bus for mechanical and electrical repairs.

Meanwhile, Central North MTTD Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, has praised the fire service, police, and all stakeholders for their role in the successful rescue operation.
