The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie (MP), to explore deeper collaboration between the two nations in the areas of tourism promotion, cultural exchange, and support for Ghana’s Creative Arts Industry.

Held at the Ministry’s office, the meeting reaffirmed the long-standing relationship between Ghana and China, with both sides emphasizing the importance of cultural diplomacy and mutual respect in advancing shared development goals.

H.E. Tong Defa expressed China’s continued interest in fostering stronger cultural cooperation, highlighting potential opportunities for Ghana’s participation in international exhibitions, investment in tourism infrastructure, and joint cultural exchange programs. He noted that these initiatives would further enhance people-to-people connections and promote innovation rooted in cultural heritage.

In her remarks, Hon. Gomashie reiterated the Government of Ghana’s commitment to positioning the country as a hub for cultural tourism in West Africa. She welcomed China’s support—both technical and financial—in helping Ghana achieve this vision. The Minister also extended an invitation to the Chinese Embassy to take part in upcoming cultural events and to consider co-organized projects in film, music, and heritage preservation.

A key topic discussed during the bilateral engagement was the rehabilitation of the National Theatre of Ghana. Hon. Gomashie presented the project as a strategic priority in Ghana’s cultural development agenda and sought Chinese cooperation in its implementation.

Present at the meeting were Deputy Minister Hon. Yusif I. Jajah (MP), Mr. Geoffrey Tamakloe, Director for Tourism, and Mr. Divine K. Owusu-Ansah, Director for Culture and Creative Arts. Ambassador Tong Defa was accompanied by Mr. Eason Wong, an official of the Chinese Embassy in Accra.

The meeting ended with both parties expressing optimism about the future of Ghana-China relations in the cultural and tourism sectors and pledged continued collaboration for mutual benefit.
