EC Chair to face Parliament over ballot contracts, undeclared results on Thursday

Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Adukwei Mensa is expected to appear before Parliament’s Committee of the Whole on Thursday, June 19, to answer questions from South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.

The MP is demanding clarity on whether the EC has awarded any contracts for the printing and supply of ballot papers since the 2024 elections.

He is also pressing the Commission to explain why it has yet to declare the parliamentary results for the Ablekuma North constituency.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who announced the EC Chair’s appearance, also confirmed that Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah will present all mining agreements for parliamentary scrutiny.

“The only thing that we can do to contribute to this is to scrutinise the mining agreements and make sure that the agreements are favourable to the people of Ghana,” he said.

His comments followed concerns by Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who accused mining companies of operating illegally without parliamentary approval. “This is wrong and it is against the Constitution,” Annoh-Dompreh said, referencing the Gold Fields Damang Mines lease.

The House is also scheduled to receive briefings from several other ministers, including those responsible for Energy, Foreign Affairs, Environment, and Trade, on issues ranging from flooding to foreign policy and infrastructure.
