ECG anticipates reduction in power losses as Anwomaso electricity generation hub nears completion

The Electricity Company of Ghana anticipates reduction in power losses in the Ashanti region as the Anwomaso electricity generation hub nears completion.

About three plants are at advanced stages of completion with a gas supply in construction. Genser, Aksa Energy, CENIT Energy and the KITPP, formerly known as AMERI, are among the sector players actively working at the site.

Ahead of project completion, a delegation from ECG visited the site to assess the operations of upstream players to understand and monitor their activities.

ECG PRO for Ashanti West Region, Benjamin Obeng Antwi, indicated the project will help improve power supply in the region and benefit parts of the country.

“Currently most of our generation plants are in Tema and Western Region so having a generation site in the middle belt to boost power supply from the middle belt to the northern sector is a step in the right direction,” he said.

Mr. Antwi further indicated, “Once power will be generated at Anwomaso in Ashanti Region and our cherished customers will be closer to the source, the voltage profile will improve and transmission losses will also reduce since power will not be transmitted from Tema or Western Region to Kumasi.”

A part of the project being undertaken by Aksa Energy is expected to provide 250 MW to the national grid; phase one of the project will be completed in May and Phase two by the end of 2025.

CENIT Energy on its part is expected to generate 330MW, with 110MW available by 3rd quarter as phase one.

VRA is currently running 6 units of the K1TPP with a capacity between 138-145 MW. The second phase of relocating the Ameri plant from Western Region to Kumasi is expected to be completed by July, 2025. The remaining four units are already on site.

Genser, as the gas supply company, is expected to provide gas for all these plants once completed.

Addressing the generation companies, Director of New Business and Risk Management at the Electricity at ECG, Mr. Ebenezer Baiden admonished the companies to strictly adhere to the local content law and ensure gender balance in employment.

“ECG as a company promotes gender equality through the Gender and Social Inclusion Policy, so kindly ensure you try as much as possible to recruit from the Region and also consider women during employment to enable indigenes to benefit directly from this project”, he added.
