Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take swift and decisive action to address the alarming erosion of discipline in senior high schools across the country.
Expressing deep concern over recent developments, the Minister warned that growing misconduct among students threatens the integrity of Ghana’s education system.
Addressing a gathering of school heads in Sunyani, Bono Region, Mr. Iddrisu pointed to a recent shooting incident at SDA Senior High School in Kumasi as a disturbing sign of deteriorating discipline in schools. He described the episode as one that “leaves much to be desired” and called for urgent and comprehensive reforms.
He emphasized that such violent incidents not only endanger students and staff but also undermine efforts to create safe and conducive learning environments.
To tackle the issue head-on, Mr. Iddrisu affirmed that the government has given its full support to GES Director-General, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, to roll out bold reforms aimed at restoring order in schools and eliminating disruptive behavior.
According to the Minister, the current situation demands a collaborative approach among educators, administrators, parents, and policymakers to restore discipline as a core value within the country’s educational institutions.
“He has our full policy support to enforce those directives. So, the ‘unGhanaian’ development of shooting in Kumasi, the Director General of the GES has the full support of the government for you to strengthen your inspection in order that guns, knives, and other violent tools are not found in our schools,” he stated.
