EduCenter has launched a National Environmental Month campaign aimed at deepening environmental stewardship and promoting sustainability across Ghana.
The initiative, launched in collaboration with Knutsford University and Zoomlion Ghana Limited, was unveiled alongside a summit that focused on collective action toward a cleaner, greener, and blue environment.
Speaking at the event, Mr Nanayaw Kwakye-Boadu, CEO of EduCenter, emphasised that the campaign seeks to involve diverse people of the Ghanaian population, especially young people, to intensify environmental and sanitation advocacy.
He noted that while progress has been made over the past decade in promoting sanitation and environmental awareness, much more remains to be done.
He mentioned that the campaign is anchored on five key pillars, including engaging traditional leaders, religious leaders, the creative arts industry, the media, and volunteerism.
Mr. Emmanuel emphasised that their wide reach and following could play a critical role in encouraging the public to take sanitation and environmental issues seriously.
Madam Esther Amankwah, Deputy Registrar of Knutsford University, also emphasised the importance of environmental and sanitation issues, urging the nation to treat them as a priority.
“As an institution, we are committed to this cause,” she said. “And going forward, we will engage other stakeholders, including Corporate Ghana, relevant ministries, and government agencies, to ensure we develop diagnostic tools and strategies to make sure we protect our environment.”
In a keynote address, Madam Emma Adwoa Appiaa Osei-Duah, Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs at Zoomlion Ghana Ltd., described the degradation of forest reserves, the rate of waste generation, and plastic pollution levels as alarming and in urgent need of collective action.
She stated that Ghana generates about 12 million tonnes of waste daily, with only 10% being recycled.
She said the partnership goes beyond waste management. “It’s about igniting a movement to inculcate environmental education in schools and communities,” she stressed.
She called on businesses to integrate sustainability into their core operations and urged government agencies to strengthen environmental policies, enforce bylaws, and support tree-planting and clean-up initiatives nationwide.
She also encouraged citizens to adopt the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling waste.
