Failure to implement reforms in energy sector bad for the economy — Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader in Parliament and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has criticised government handling of the energy sector.

He said the failure of the Mahama-led government to implement proper reforms is collapsing the energy sector.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, June 13, Afenyo-Markin urged the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor to walk his talk.

According to him, the sector minister promised to implement the loss reduction programme, including other measures to deal with the situation.

“Many people use the power that we pay for without paying. I came across a report and it was alarming. That about 30 percent or even less of Ghanaian households and industries pay for the power we consume, yet we often play politics with the issue when the burden is on the Central government. I think that the time has come for us to support the position taken by the Energy Minister. After all, he came to this House that he is going to pursue certain measures to help deal with those who are not paying for the power they consume,” he stated.

He urges colleagues in the Majority Caucus to put behind the politics and deal with the energy crisis with all seriousness to bring relief to businesses and Ghanaians in general.

“Colleagues, we may talk politics, but the energy crisis, if it starts, will bite all of us. In fact, if we don’t deal with it now, it will affect the economy in general. So I believe the Minister must be encouraged to walk the talk, and all of us should get on board so that the situation doesn’t get out of hand to necessitate another levy,” he added.
