Fighting Corruption Has Been The Cornerstone Of My Administration – What Went Wrong Akufo-Addo?

During his political campaign, Akufo-Addo won over the people’s hearts with his promises and pledges after claiming that his political opponent, John Mahama, was corrupt and incompetent. Among several of his promises, one was to combat corruption. Even though Akufo-Addo maintains that “fighting corruption has been the cornerstone of his administration,” Ghanaians witnessed the increase of widespread corruption at its highest peak during the eight-year leadership of the former Ghanaian leader.

While Ghanaians feel the impact of corruption, many NPP politicians, including Freddie Blay, backed Akufo-Addo on a number of issues, arguing that his government has combated corruption more effectively than Mahama’s. Blay also asserted that “Akufo-Addo’s government has fought corruption more than any administration in history.” Undercover corruption, money laundering, and state looting became more prevalent among the NPP, leading to the collapse of the economy, businesses, and investments.

The first significant case that revealed Akufo-Addo as a leader who fostered corruption in his government was when Ghana’s private investigator, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, captured Charles Bissue on camera engaging in a dishonest transaction. Next came the startling tale of Eugene Arhin, the former Flagstaff House director of communication to the president. During his four years of employment with the NPP government, Eugene Arhin allegedly purchased 32 flats, five homes, and five cars.

Ghanaians believed the former president would fire Arhin in that contentious matter, but he retained him in his administration. Following Kwadwo Owusu-Afriyie’s, also known as Sir John, passing, the general secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) from 2010 to 2014 left seventy-five properties in his will. Kissi Agyebeng, the special prosecutor, was compelled to freeze the deceased NPP politician’s assets due to the startling amount of assets in the dead man’s will within that short period.

However, the unhappy Akufo-Addo gave an order to the special prosecutor’s office to release the frozen assets to the dead man’s family, and he complied. How can someone who is committed to fighting corruption have relaxed and failed to follow through while still telling Ghanaians that his efforts to fight corruption are remarkable? The NPP overlooked the case of Cecilia Dapaah, another corrupt politician, to enjoy her booty with impunity. Under Akufo-Addo, despite the impact of corruption, nobody was either accused or prosecuted.

According to the investigation, the former sanitation minister was in possession of $1 million, 300,000 euros, 350,000 GHC, and other personal belongings, including a bag that was worth $35,000 and jewelry worth $95,000,95,000, at her home. Like all the corruption instances, this case was also swept away by the wind and turned into national gossip. Since Dapaah was also allowed to enjoy her wealth with impunity, Ghanaians were incensed by this particular situation and felt they had been disrespected and deceived by Akufo-Addo.

Following the revelation of the book “Agyapadie,” which exposed the NPP’s long-standing conspiracy to seize control of the state’s most important financial institutions and resources, Ghanaians began to feel as though the country had been embezzled and looted, and the NPP lost the elections in December 2024. Amid a national debt of GHC 763 billion, the IMF and COVID-19 funds were embezzled, and major institutions, including the COCOBOD, SSNIT, ECG, and others, were made bankrupt.

This was one of the reasons President John Mahama was compelled to establish the ORAL-Operation RecoveAll Loot team in order to retrieve all of the money that had been embezzled, after declaring that “Ghana has become a crime scene.” Under the Akufo-Addo administration, Ghana lost GHC 584 million in embezzled monies through ghost names from the NSS alone between 2017 and 2024.

Prominent NPP politicians, including former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Kwabena Adu-Boahen, the former director of the National Signals Bureau, his wife, Bernard Antwi-Bosiako, and others, have been implicated in varying degrees of crimes under the direction of attorney general Dr. Dominic Ayine. Many NPP politicians that have embezzled state monies, and in fear, have now decided to return their plunder because they don’t want their identities to be in the public eye or to be charged with a crime.

I haven’t only stated that Akufo-Addo appointed his relative, Ken Ofori-Atta, as the finance minister to enable corruption; in addition, I wrote an article about that. Criminals take on specific characteristics so that those they deceive won’t suspect them. Although Ken Ofori-Atta appears modest and courteous by nature, he is a very dangerous individual who steals from his victims without feeling sorry or sympathetic. He does this by using white shirts, trousers, and the Bible.

The dilemma in Ghana right now is that “the harvest is plentiful, but laborers are few.” There are far too many political crimes on the ORAL list and under investigation, but the attorney general is the sole one handling all of those matters. However, the government is actively engaged to ensure that the cases are handled promptly since it wants to keep its commitments to the people. I hold the former President Akufo-Addo more accountable than anyone else for ruining the nation.
