Five talking points from matchday 24 of Ghana Premier League

Matchday 24 saw Hearts of Oak, GoldStars and Kotoko dropped crucial points in their chase for the Ghana Premier League crown.

3Sports takes a look at some talking points from the weekend.

Title chasers slip up in league quest

Rather uncharacteristically, there was a slip up involving all three teams who are vying for the Ghana Premier League.

Kotoko set the ball rolling on Saturday against Samartex.

The Porcupine Warriors had to settle for a 1-1 draw against the defending Ghana Premier League Champions, playing into Hearts of Oak’s hands.

However, by evening, Hearts seem to have taken no cue from the game as they lost 1-0 to Dreams FC.

The defeat was a surprisng one, owing to how good Hearts have played in the league all year.

After watching Kotoko and Hearts slip up, GoldStars could have moved three points away from their closest rivals with a win in Dormaa against Aduana but failed to capitalise.

A 2-0 defeat against Aduana meant they couldn’t take advantage.

• Hearts suffer painful defeat

Hearts suffered a painful loss in their title aspirations.

Just as fans began to belief this could be the Phobians season, they fell flat to Dreams FC.

After Dreams took the lead after three minutes, Hearts struggled to make any case for their title hopes

Hearts fans may still be reeling after the defeat. The Phobians were on an amazing run, winning four of their seven league games in 2025.

The defeat means Hears have not beaten Dreams FC in their last six games and, most importantly, they have lost a game in the league since the Super Clash against Kotoko.

Still not enough reason for Ouattara to dodge his post match conference.

• Samartex maintain decent form

Nurudeen Amadu’s departure may have been a blessing in disguise.

After parting ways with the title-winning coach, there’s been an upturn in form.

Samartex are now unbeaten in their last seven games, showing flashes of the Championship form of last season.

Not even title chasing Kotoko could put an end to their run.

Their amazing form stretches back to December 29, two days after officially appointing new coach Christopher Ennin.

In that time, they’ve won twice and drawn five.

• Nations FC stop the rot

Nations FC finally put their woeful form behind them.

After three consecutive defeats, Nations FC finally picked up a match needed victory.

Their 2-1 win over Medeama was their first since January.

The win thrusts them back into the title conversation, as they lie three points behind leaders Kotoko.

Although they have stuttered recently, the victory was no real surprise.

Nations have been the most dominant side sway from home, picking up the most points (17) of any team in the league.

• 17 team league set for restructuring

Earlier in the week, Nsoatreman communicated their decision to withdraw from the league.

Their decision stems from the violence that unfolded between themselves and Kotoko on matchday 19.

Basake Holy Stars were set to face Nsoatreman but the game did not go ahead as planned.

The withdrawal of Nsoatreman, who cited safety and security concerns of players as the primary factor means, the GFA needs to restructure.

As to whether the requisite adjustments would be made, it is yet to be seen.
