Five talking points from matchday 31 of 2024/25 Ghana Premier League

Asante Kotoko are flying under interim boss Karim Zito, adding a cup final in the wings and firmly in the mix to win the Ghana Premier League.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak are finishing the season with a flourish while Medeama continue to face an uphill task on the road.

3Sports takes a look at five talking points from the weekend’s action.

Wo kum apem a apem b3ba – Kotoko soldier on

The ripple effect of having a new manager has worked to good effect for Kotoko.

Kotoko have been unstoppable since the arrival of Karim Zito, winning three games and drawing one in four games across all competitions.

The latest evidence was a 4-1 mauling of Dreams FC, Karim Zito’s former side, in Sunday at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The result leaves fourth-placed Kotoko two points behind league leaders GoldStars and still firmly in the mix to win the league.

The 4-1 win also meant Kotoko equalled their biggest win margin this season, same as the 4-1 victory over Vision FC in January.

Hearts of Oak eye strong season finish

Hearts of Oak came out tops in their battle against former manager Samuel Boadu and Berekum Chelsea in Berekum.

Mawuli Wayo’s goal secured Hearts of Oak’s second win – technically first, given their previous 3-0 win against Nsoatreman was a walkover – in their last six games.

After Hearts’ stodgy start to the campaign,  where they were winless in their first three games, the feasible prospect, as it stands, will be an honourable top four finish.

At the moment, Hearts (49 points) are five points off fourth-placed Kotoko.

Medeama awful away form persists

You would have to cast your mind back to 2024 of November to find the last time Medeama won a game away from home in the league.

It was against Young Apostles.

Since then, it’s been nine defeats in their last 11 away games.

They’ve been underwhelming on the road and Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Karela was no surprise.

Goalfest not enough to take Accra Lions out of drop zone

Torrential rains destroyed properties and dislodged a number of people on Sunday night.

But 24 hours prior, a rain of equal measure took place in Accra Lions’ game against  Aduana. This time around, it was raining goals.

A high-scoring game saw Accra Lions beat Aduana 5-3.

Lions would have hoped the win would move them out of the relegation zone.

At least, they were out temporarily at half-time when they led 4-0, but after the recess, the three goals conceded against Aduana hurt their goal difference tally on the league log.

Heart of Lions stumble at crucial point

Four wins from four, seven goals scored and two goals conceded.

That was Heart of Lions’ form ahead of the tie against Basake Holy Stars.

But at the end of the day, the scoreline is always the most important outcome.

The game ended 0-0, a result which leaves Heart of Lions two points adrift of the top of the league.
