Torrential rains on Sunday have displaced approximately 500 residents in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region, leaving behind a trail of destruction in several communities.

The hardest-hit areas include Iron City, Dokutsekope, Akweley Cross River, and Kpometey Zongo, where homes were submerged and residents lost valuable personal belongings, including electrical appliances and household items.

Displaced residents have expressed their frustrations, with many lamenting the extent of the damage caused by the floods and the lack of preparedness to handle such natural disasters.

Speaking to Class News, Member of Parliament for Kasoa, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, confirmed that temporary shelters have been arranged for affected families while longer-term solutions are being considered.

Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, Seth Sabah Serwonoo-Banini, attributed the flooding to inadequate drainage systems and the indiscriminate blocking of waterways, noting that the Assembly has identified the issue and will soon roll out measures to address the problem.

“We are aware of the root causes of the flooding and are taking steps to improve drainage and enforce building regulations to prevent future occurrences,” the MCE stated.
