Force Bawumia to responsibility for dying victim of his convoy accident — Group run to Harvard University President

The New Ghana Social Justice Forum has appealed to the President of Harvard University to urge Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana, to take full responsibility for the welfare of Mariam Oumar, a critically ill victim of his convoy accident.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, the leader of the group, Mr. Yahaya Alhassan, recounted the incident that occurred on Friday, December 10, 2021, at approximately 2:00 PM.

He explained that Dr. Bawumia’s convoy, rushing to the airport for a flight to Tamale, struck Mariam Oumar. While public pressure led to a meeting between Dr. Bawumia and Mariam before the 2024 elections, no meaningful action has been taken to ensure her well-being. She remains in a critical condition, fighting for her life.

Mr. Alhassan stressed that their renewed call for justice stems from Dr. Bawumia’s pattern of high-profile charitable donations. He cited substantial financial support given to various causes, including a donation to Rev. Owusu Bempah, a $56,400 contribution through Kumasi-based Islamic cleric Sheikh Anas Tawfik for a congregant’s kidney treatment, and a GHS 300,000 cheque to media personality Kwame Sefa Kayi’s Kokrokoo Foundation.

“In light of these generous contributions, we cannot comprehend why the Vice President has ignored the plight of Mariam Oumar, a victim of an accident caused by his own convoy. Mariam’s life has been permanently altered. Her dreams shattered. Her future stolen. This is a deeply troubling situation, and we urge the Vice President to take immediate action to restore his honour and fulfill his moral obligation,” he lamented.

He further emphasized that Harvard University, known for its commitment to amplifying the voices of the vulnerable, should take a principled stand. Given the institution’s ties with Dr. Bawumia, the group believes Harvard must use its influence to advocate for justice, ensuring that political ambition does not leave victims neglected.

“Harvard’s platforms have long been recognized as a space that upholds human rights, promotes the development of young girls, and sets global standards for human dignity. These values must be carefully considered when inviting individuals like Dr. Bawumia, who has failed to take responsibility for Mariam’s suffering,” he advised.

Mr. Alhassan, therefore, urged Harvard University to call on Dr. Bawumia to take full responsibility for Mariam’s welfare before it is too late.
