Former Electoral Commission (EC) Deputy Chairperson, Amadu Sulley, passed away yesterday in Accra.

His burial, held at the Madina Public Cemetery, drew a large number of sympathizers from the Islamic community, who gathered to pay their final respects.

Early Life and Education

Amadu Sulley began his education at Ghana National School (now Richard Akwei Memorial School) in Accra. He later attended Accra Academy and Opoku Ware School, where he obtained his Ordinary Level and Advanced Level Certificates.

He continued his studies at the University of Ghana, earning a Diploma in Statistics in 1985. He later pursued further studies at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), where he obtained a Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Public Administration in 1993 and 1995, respectively. His project focused on the Ghanaian Electoral System.

Career at the Electoral Commission

In 2012, Amadu Sulley was appointed Deputy Chairperson of the EC by then-President John Evans Atta Mills. Before his appointment, he served as the Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the Commission. His promotion marked a significant milestone, as he became the first career electoral officer to reach that high rank.

As Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations, he played a key role in the commission’s activities until his dismissal in June 2018, following allegations of illegally transferring votes during the 2016 general elections.

Amadu Sulley leaves behind a legacy in Ghana’s electoral system, having dedicated decades of service to improving its structure and operations.
