The Member of Parliament for Akatsi South and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has extended a substantial relief package to over 400 households and several educational institutions affected by a recent devastating rainstorm in parts of the constituency.

Upon learning of the extent of the destruction while abroad, Ahiafor swiftly mobilised resources. “As soon as I landed in Ghana, I dropped my bags and rushed to the constituency to personally assess the damage. The situation was dire,” he recounted. Deeply moved by the plight of his constituents, Ahiafor personally arranged for 30 bundles of roofing sheets and sought additional support from benevolent individuals, including his cousin.

Through the Managing Director of Gacem Cement, Ahiafor secured a donation of 1,700 bags of cement. In addition, Mr Anthony Eid Saud generously contributed a further 50 bundles of aluminium roofing sheets. In total, the constituency has received 80 bundles of roofing sheets and 1,700 bags of cement to support the affected households and schools.

The items were officially received on behalf of the victims and schools by the NDC Constituency Chairman for Akatsi South, Mr Anthony Owusu, and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Daniel Dagba.

At a brief handover ceremony, Mr. Ahiafor expressed his deep gratitude to the Board and Management of Gacem Cement and to Mr Anthony Eid Saud for their swift and generous support. “May the good Lord bless and replenish them for this act of kindness,” he prayed.

He assured the public that the distribution of items would be conducted transparently and fairly. “Our party stands on the principles of transparency, probity, and accountability. Whatever we receive for and on behalf of the constituency will go directly to the victims,” he stated. He also pledged that every donation received would be publicly acknowledged to maintain transparency.

Several educational institutions were among the worst affected, with roofs torn off and perimeter walls destroyed. Hon. Ahiafor announced that 200 bags of cement have been earmarked for rebuilding the damaged walls of affected schools, ensuring that pupils can return to a safe and conducive learning environment.

“Our aim is to re-roof the schools as quickly as possible so the children can resume classes. The fence walls will also be reconstructed to ensure students learn in a secure setting,” he added.

Residents expressed their profound appreciation for the timely intervention but appealed for further assistance, stressing that the destruction was widespread and that current resources were insufficient for complete recovery.

Speaking at the event, the MCE for Akatsi South, Hon. Daniel Dagba, thanked the MP for facilitating the donation and appealed to other institutions, organisations, and individuals to come to the aid of the constituency.

“We are grateful to Hon. Ahiafor for his swift response. However, the damage is extensive, and we appeal to NGOs, faith-based organisations, and corporate entities to support us with additional roofing sheets, cement, food supplies, and other essential items,” Hon. Dagba said.

NDC Constituency Chairman Mr Anthony Owusu also commended Hon. Ahiafor’s efforts and reiterated the appeal for more support to help rebuild homes and restore the livelihoods of affected residents.

As distribution continues across the impacted communities, Hon. Ahiafor emphasised that anyone wishing to donate may contact him directly, or reach out to Mr Anthony Owusu or Hon. Daniel Dagba. He assured the public that all donations would go directly to the victims.

“The people of Akatsi South are resilient, but they need your support to rebuild their lives. Any assistance, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference,” he concluded.
