George Owusu takes over as acting CEO of National Ambulance Service

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr. George Kojo Owusu as the new Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Ambulance Service (NAS), following the dismissal of former CEO Dr. Nuhu Zakaria. The decision was made in line with Article 195(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 18(1) of the National Ambulance Service Act, 2020 (Act 1041).

The appointment was formally announced in a press statement released on Thursday, July 11, 2025, by the NAS Public Relations Unit.

Dr. Owusu is a highly respected Emergency Physician Specialist and a chartered administrator, with more than two decades of experience in emergency medical service delivery. He also holds a Master of Arts in Health Law and Ethics from the University of Ghana School of Law and has worked across clinical, academic, and administrative roles.

Prior to this appointment, he served as the Medical Director of Health Services at Takoradi Technical University, where he spearheaded initiatives to enhance healthcare delivery and emergency readiness.

According to the official statement signed by Mr. Simmons Yussif Kewura, Deputy Director of Public Relations at NAS, Dr. Owusu’s appointment comes at a critical moment for the agency.

“The National Ambulance Service welcomes Dr. Owusu’s appointment and expresses confidence in his leadership to drive innovation, institutional growth, and strategic reforms aimed at improving service delivery across all regions,”

the release noted.

Dr. Owusu is expected to lead the NAS into a new phase of modernization, expanded coverage, and improved emergency response times nationwide. His mandate includes scaling up operations and aligning the service with international best practices in pre-hospital care.

The management and staff of the NAS have pledged their full support to the new Acting CEO as he assumes leadership of Ghana’s frontline emergency response institution.
