GES, Brilliant Educational Consult train teachers in Kumasi to boost their competencies

The 2019 NaCCA curriculum for Ghanaian schools, designed to transform teaching and learning with emphasis on competencies and values, has faced challenges with its full implementation.

Teachers as frontline educators are observed to lack the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver the curriculum’s objectives, with gaps in effective knowledge transfer and practical learning in schools.

The Ghana Education Service has partnered Brilliant Educational Consult to engage heads of schools and teachers to equip them with skills in training students in science, technology, engineering, artificial intelligence and mathematics (STEAM).

At the 2025 Ghana EDTECH workshop, organized in collaboration with the Kumasi metro of the Ghana Education Service (GES), it was revealed that students’ lessons are still being conducted and assessed with old methods and techniques.

President of Ghana National Association of Authors and Publishers and Lead Facilitator of the training, John Akwasi Amponsah, says the narrow implementation is leaving learners unable to keep up the pace of improvement in the world.

“Education is programmed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge to function effectively within the world of work. Given the problems of today and issues happening, our era is problem-driven, so we cannot continue to rely on traditional education and pedagogy. The NACCA curriculum in 2019 hasn’t seen full implementation by teaching.

“The teacher, who is the front line educationist, gets hold of the material to drive the learning, to equip knowledge and skills. Yet the teachers did not have the skills to train the students. This brought the synergy between Brilliant Educational Consult and Ghana Education Service, Kumasi Metro, to organize this workshop to equip teachers for the skills students would require,” he said.

The workshop was themed: “Leveraging AI, digital tools, instructional materials, and innovative pedagogies and assessment models to enhance learning, foster skills acquisition, and improve educational outcomes”.

The workshop assembled the Association of Authors and Publishers, heads of schools, school administrators and teachers.

The Founder of Brilliant Education Consult, John Akwasi Amponsah, emphasized the need to shift to a philosophy of education that prioritizes STEAM and STEAM skills.

“21st century skills like problem solving, digital literacy, effective communication etc. If a child is able to know this skills and demonstrate them, then it’s assumed the child is empowered by the new level of education. STEAM is science, technology, AI and mathematics.

“Transformation in education happens around three agencies, the policymakers, including the National Council for Curriculum Assessment, take responsibility for designing a curriculum, and authors refashion them into instructional material,” he said.

Participants were taken through a holistic and broad introduction of STEAM education, the focal point of STEM education which is knowledge, core competencies and values, and comprehensive AI studies, and how to deploy AI to plan lessons.

They are confident the training will make teaching effective, especially with the usage and focus on current tools of technology.

“I hope it cuts across the country. This training is essential, and it has opened my eyes to the world of AI, and I am amazed,” a participant shared.
