GES postpones reopening date for single-track SHSs to April 23, 2025

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a new reopening date for single-track Senior High Schools (SHSs), shifting the original schedule from March 29, 2025, to April 23, 2025.

In an official circular dated March 27, 2025, and addressed to all regional education directors, the GES directed school heads to inform parents, guardians, and students about the adjustment.

The letter, signed by Prince C. Agyeman-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division, on behalf of the Acting Director-General, urged stakeholders to take note and prepare accordingly.

Originally, students were set to resume on March 29 after vacating on March 4. However, the upcoming Eid-Ul-Fitr holiday on March 30 and 31 initially led to a shift to April 1. Following further assessment, GES extended the date to April 23 to ensure a smooth academic schedule.

The Ministry of the Interior explained that since Eid-Ul-Fitr falls on Sunday, March 30, the President, through an Executive Instrument (E.I.), had declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, as public holidays.

Cassandra Twum-Ampofo, Head of the GES Public Relations Unit, clarified that reopening just before multiple holidays would cause unnecessary disruptions and pose travel risks for students.

“Monday and Tuesday had been declared statutory holidays, and right after that, there would be Easter celebrations. It would not be prudent to have students traveling back and forth,” she stated.

She assured that the delay would not negatively impact final-year students preparing for the 2025 WASSCE, as additional instructional hours would be introduced to compensate for lost time.

The adjustment applies only to single-track SHSs, while double-track students will follow their existing academic calendar as scheduled.
