Prof Victor Antwi, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Central Region, has emphasised the importance of Ghana catching up with global advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Speaking at the Skills and Multi-IT Summit organised by the Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI) and hosted by UEW’s Mathematics Department, Prof Antwi noted while AI had the potential to drive development, its abuse was a major concern.
“The way AI is being abused is what I don’t like; however, if we can control it, it will go a long way to help us develop. Where it has gotten to in the world, let us catch up with them quickly and move along so that we as a nation would not be left behind,” Prof Antwi said.
Thus, he charged authorities in the educational sector to introduce AI into curricula as soon as possible, while hinting at plans by UEW to incorporate the study of AI into programme options for students in the nearest future.
The summit, which attracted over 1700 participants, aimed to equip students with skills in technology and innovation. The event featured hands-on training sessions, exhibitions of prototype technology equipment by student groups, and insightful discussions on the future of jobs and careers in technology in Ghana.
Facilitators, including Jeremiah Agyabeng, Bismark Ebo Yankson, and Ambassador Henry Osabutey, delivered practical training in various fields such as digital marketing, computer programming, and diplomacy. Other notable facilitators covered topics like video editing, robotics, and data analysis.
The summit was graced by notable guests, including Peter Bismarck Kwofie, Executive Director of ILAPI, and Prof Stephen Johnson Mitchual, Vice Chancellor of UEW.
In his closing remarks, Peter Bismarck Kwofie reiterated ILAPI’s commitment to promoting innovation, liberty, and policy reforms that empower individuals and communities.
