The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has once again rendered an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for the things that went wrong under its immediate past Nana Akufo-Addo-led administration.
The party, which was in power until 2024, lost the general election to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer John Dramani Mahama by over 1.7 million votes in the presidential race.
According to analysts and party insiders, including the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the defeat was largely due to unpopular decisions, arrogance in governance, and worsening economic conditions.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV on Wednesday, June 18, the NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, admitted that although the party did its best while in government, it failed in some areas.
“As a political party, certainly we did our best, but we couldn’t have gotten everything right. And I have always said that on behalf of our then government, our political party, certain things that we could not do right, we apologise for it,” he said.
“As a party, we are always ready to learn and make sure that when we come back to power, the good things that we did, we will build on. And those mistakes that we made — we will not repeat those mistakes,” he added.
Meanwhile, as part of efforts to rebuild the party, the NPP’s National Executive Council has set January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Aside from former flagbearer Dr. Bawumia and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, other likely contenders include former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
