NPP National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, claims that President John Dramani Mahama is planning to run for a third term in office, citing his appointment of new Supreme Court Justices and an alleged ploy to dismiss Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo as evidence.

According to Nana Boakye, there is what he describes as a “sinister motive” behind the controversy surrounding the judiciary.

He explained on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show that the President seeks to gain absolute control over the judiciary, as he currently holds executive and parliamentary control.

He stressed that the President’s nominees to the Supreme Court are part of a grand strategy to pack the court with loyalists to support his bid for a third term in government.

“He knows it will be difficult to get a referendum. So, what I can do is pack the court with judges who will favor me, then sponsor a judicial interpretation of Article 62, which states that everybody has two terms,” he told host Nana Yaw Kesseh.

“Therefore, he seeks an interpretation to mean that the two terms can be continuous and consecutive. He wants to rely on such an interpretation to go for a third term,” he added.

Condemning this move, Nana Boakye labeled His Excellency John Mahama a “tyrant.”

He said, “It is worrying that our democratically and constitutionally elected President is becoming a constitutional tyrant and a dictator.”
