Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, has lauded President John Mahama’s leadership for the economic recovery, calling it a pivotal time for Ghana.
In a statement titled “The Great NDC and Ghana under a Great President Make Ghana Shine Again,” Dr. Spio-Garbrah linked the recent positive economic trends to what he described as integrity, prompt decision-making, and accountability permeating government operations.
“The impressive results being reported by the BoG and in other economic sectors stem from Ghanaians electing a significantly more honest President on December 7th last year,” he remarked.
He praised President Mahama for adhering to strict timelines when they are set. “President JM [John Mahama] holding himself and the GoG accountable to a stringent 120-day deadline for meeting key objectives,” he stressed.
According to Spio-Garbrah, the rapid nomination and vetting of government appointees, coupled with decisive leadership and enhanced coordination among key economic institutions, have been crucial in stabilizing and revitalizing Ghana’s economy.
“Improved decisions by the President and new NDC appointees,” along with “Better collaboration between the Minister of Finance and the Governor of the BoG,” he pointed out, were clear indicators of enhanced governance.
He also commended the creation of the GoldBod, a new body responsible for overseeing gold exports, labeling it “a prudent decision” that has greatly contributed to the country’s economic success.
Spio-Garbrah did not hesitate to draw a comparison between the current administration and the previous one.
“Less or no overt theft by GoG officials. This last factor alone was responsible for the losses being reported under NPP at the Cocobod and in the gold trade,” he noted, implying that diminished corruption has been a significant factor.
