Ghana’s poultry sector can thrive with local investment

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has called on stakeholders in the agriculture sector to invest in local poultry production instead of spending millions on imports.

She made the call during the 5th National Poultry Day celebration on Tuesday in Accra.

She noted that poultry farming was not only an agricultural activity but also a matter of cultural pride and national identity.

She urged Ghanaians to see it as a way to support food sovereignty and preserve traditional cuisine.

“If we’re spending millions to import poultry, then surely that same amount can be used to strengthen our systems here,” she said.

She emphasized that this was not just a question but a challenge for stakeholders to rethink their approach and take action.

“Why should we keep importing poultry feed when we can develop local alternatives?” she asked, calling on researchers and entrepreneurs to work together to find solutions for the sector’s challenges.

The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Mr John Setor Dumelo, echoed the same sentiments, stating that poultry farming offers strong opportunities for livelihoods and national growth.

“This is the best time to be a poultry farmer in Ghana. Even starting with just ten birds at home helps reduce imports and feed families,” he added.

The event also saw the launch of the ‘Nkunkor Nkiti Nkiti’ project, which encourages household poultry farming as both a lifestyle and a contribution to the nation.

Birds were distributed to participants and schools, including Accra Academy, PRESEC Legon, and Achimota SHS. Culinary exhibitions and competitions showcased Ghana’s poultry-based dishes, highlighting the role of poultry in the country’s culture and development.
