President John Dramani Mahama has called on residents of Bawku in the Upper East Region to embrace peace and unity as Muslims mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Speaking at a grand durbar to celebrate Eid Al-Fitr at the Independence Square in Accra on Monday, March 31, he appealed to the people of Bawku to end hostilities and work towards lasting peace.
“My brothers and sisters, let us work together, guided by the principles of faith, justice, and compassion, to create a brighter future for ourselves and future generations. May Allah bless our nation and guide us on the path of peace and prosperity.
“And on this day, I want to take the opportunity once again to call on our brothers and sisters in Bawku to give peace a chance on this holy occasion as we celebrate the feast of Eid Al-Fitr,” he urged.
The President also raised concerns over reckless riding and driving during the Eid celebrations, warning that such practices often result in fatal road crashes.
“Eid Al-Fitr should be observed with peace and dignity. Unfortunately, in the past, reckless riding and driving have led to unfortunate losses of life. No one must die in the celebration of Eid Al-Fitr. No one must die at the end of the holy month of Ramadan,” he stressed.
He announced that he had directed the Ghana Police Service to take action against reckless drivers and motorcyclists to ensure public safety.
“I want to caution our young people who drive their cars recklessly and ride their motorbikes dangerously. I’ve asked the police to look out for you, and if you ride or drive recklessly, they will arrest you,” he warned.
