Regional Executives and some members of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in the Bono Region have paid a courtesy call on the Bono Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Addae Akwaboa.
The visit was to congratulate him on his recent appointment and to express appreciation for honouring their invitation to the World Press Freedom Day celebration.
Madam Regina Bennet Siaw, Acting President of the Bono GJA, in her brief remarks, assured the Minister of the media’s unwavering support in promoting peace and development in the region. She added that the GJA leadership is committed to supporting the Minister in achieving the government’s “reset agenda.”
In his response, Mr. Akwaboa thanked the GJA for the visit and expressed appreciation for their readiness to collaborate with him. He noted that his doors remain open for continued engagement and support in pursuit of the region’s development goals.
The Minister emphasized the need for responsible journalism to attract investors to the Bono Region. He urged journalists to project the region positively, cautioning against the publication of negative stories that could discourage investment.
Mr. Imoro T. Ayibani, Bono Regional Director of the Information Services Department and a GJA member, raised concerns about the growing influence of citizen journalism and some bloggers who contribute to the spread of fake news. In response, Mr. Akwaboa called on the GJA and the National Media Commission to take steps to address the situation.
He also appealed for media support in the fight against illegal mining, illegal logging, and the activities of nomadic cattle herders in the region.
Madam Siaw was accompanied by other GJA members, including Fiifii Ofosu-Okyere, Johnny Sam Arthur, Imoro T. Ayibani, and Daniel Y. Dayee.
