GNPC disburses scholarship funds for 2023 and 2024 academic years

The GNPC Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has announced the immediate commencement of bursary disbursements to its scholarship beneficiaries across the country.

This crucial release of funds covers the 2023 and 2024 academic years, providing much-needed financial relief to students and signalling a new era of efficiency and transparency for the Foundation’s educational support schemes.

The announcement, made via the GNPC Foundation’s official Facebook page today, emphasises the new leadership’s ambitious agenda to “revive and modernise its scholarship scheme”.

The Foundation aims to set “the highest global benchmarks in terms of reach, responsiveness, and impact” for its scholarship programmes.

Access to quality education remains a significant challenge in Ghana, with many deserving students facing financial hurdles.

The GNPC Foundation’s bursaries play a vital role in reducing these barriers, supporting both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in various disciplines, including critical areas like Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), which are crucial for Ghana’s economic development, particularly in the oil and gas sector.

Beyond the immediate disbursement, the GNPC Foundation revealed plans for a comprehensive “phased upgrade” of its scholarship framework.

These reforms are designed to ensure greater equity, inclusion, and long-term support for scholars:

Enhanced Criteria: The Foundation will implement new criteria that combine both merit and need, aiming to identify and support truly deserving students from diverse backgrounds. This move suggests a shift towards a more holistic assessment of applicants, balancing academic excellence with financial hardship.

Focus on Equity and Inclusion: This indicates a commitment to ensuring that the scholarship scheme benefits students from all regions of Ghana, including those from underserved communities and possibly those with disabilities, aligning with national development goals for inclusive growth.

Post-Award Support Services: A significant new feature will be the provision of comprehensive post-award support. This includes mentorship, academic monitoring, and career guidance. Such support goes beyond mere financial aid, aiming to nurture scholars’ academic and professional development, ensuring they not only complete their studies but also transition successfully into their chosen careers.

Global Exchange Opportunities: The Foundation plans to integrate global exhange opportunities into the scheme, offering Ghanaian students exposure to international academic environments and diverse learning experiences. This can enhance their global competitiveness and broaden their perspectives.

Industry Alignment: Crucially, there are plans for closer industry alignment within the scholarship scheme. This implies tailoring the scholarships to fields that directly support Ghana’s burgeoning oil and gas sector and other strategic industries, ensuring that the skills acquired by beneficiaries meet national human resource demands. This aligns with GNPC’s core mandate of building local capacity in the oil and gas value chain, from exploration and production to policy and management.

The GNPC Foundation has been a consistent supporter of education in Ghana.

Over the years, it has provided various interventions under its three main pillars: education and training, economic empowerment, and environment and social amenities.

As of October 2023, the Foundation reported having provided scholarships to over 7,800 students since 2018, including sponsoring over 200 medical students in Cuba and supporting STEM education in various tertiary institutions across Ghana.

The Foundation’s leadership urged all beneficiaries to “remain committed to their studies and continue to excel in their area of study,” emphasising the importance of academic dedication in maximising the impact of these investments.

This renewed commitment from the GNPC Foundation is poised to significantly contribute to human capital development in Ghana, particularly as the nation strives to leverage its natural resources for sustainable growth and industrialisation.
