The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has said the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBoD) will play a vital role in sustaining the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi.
According to him, the cedi has appreciated by 16.7% against the US dollar as of May 13, 2025, making it the world’s best-performing currency this year.
In a social media post on Monday, May 19, after inaugurating a newly constituted 13-member Board of Directors for the GoldBoD, Dr Forson said the gains are not by chance but the result of deliberate and coordinated economic policies.
“Our strategic focus on gold is already yielding positive results. As of May 13, 2025, the Ghana cedi has appreciated by 16.7% against the US dollar, making it the world’s best-performing currency so far this year.
“This turnaround is no accident. It reflects strong coordination between monetary and fiscal policy, improved inflows from gold, cocoa and remittances, and firm discipline in managing the public purse,” he wrote.
The Finance Minister further stated that the GoldBoD will be key to maintaining this progress and ensuring the gold sector contributes meaningfully to Ghana’s economic transformation.
Meanwhile, the newly inaugurated board has been tasked to help strengthen Ghana’s gold trade, improve transparency in the sector, and support broader economic recovery efforts.
