The Ministry of Education, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Greater Accra Regional Minister have donated relief items to students affected by the fire outbreak at Labone Senior High School.

The donated items include 300 student mattresses, 20 packets of roofing sheets, 2 boxes of roofing nails, 350 mosquito nets, and 350 pieces each of blankets, plastic buckets, plates, and cups.

These items aim to support the distressed students and help restore normalcy to school activities.

Dr. Clement Apaak, the Deputy Minister of Education, who handed over the items, applauded the headmistress and staff for their swift efforts in securing temporary accommodation for the affected students.

He stated that arrangements were being made to augment existing infrastructure to ease pressure on the current facilities. He also noted that immediate action had been taken to restore the affected buildings and make them habitable.

“As you have noticed, workmen are on-site to fix the building,” he added.

Dr. Apaak assured parents, guardians, and the public that the government was working diligently to bring back normalcy to the school.

Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, the Director-General of NADMO, said the donation would provide immediate relief to the affected students.

“To reset Ghana is to synergize efforts whenever we are required to take action so that it will have a greater impact on society,” he stated.

He called on stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education and the school administration, to contribute to improving the situation.

Rejoice Akua Acorlor, the Headmistress of Labone SHS, expressed gratitude to the government for the donation, saying, “This will significantly impact the lives of the students. The items will be used efficiently and effectively.”

The fire, which occurred on Sunday, March 15, swept through three girls’ dormitories while students were attending their afternoon prep, leaving three others unaffected.

Of the three dormitories affected, one was completely destroyed, impacting 155 students, while the other two sustained partial damage.

The Ghana National Fire Service is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
