Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to grant amnesty to Alan Kyerematen and Paul Afoko if it truly wants to rebuild unity within its ranks.
Addressing party supporters at the Takoradi Technical University Auditorium during the launch of the NPP’s nationwide Thank You tour, Agyapong stressed that genuine reconciliation was essential for the party’s future success.
He argued that bringing back sidelined members would demonstrate the NPP’s commitment to healing past divisions.
Alan Kyerematen, once a prominent figure in the NPP and a former Trade Minister, parted ways with the party after the 2024 flagbearer primaries. He subsequently launched the Movement for Change, an independent political group that contested in the 2024 general elections.
Paul Afoko, who served as the NPP’s National Chairman, was indefinitely suspended in 2015 after being accused of working against Nana Akufo-Addo’s presidential ambitions. His suspension has long remained a contentious issue within the party.
Kennedy Agyapong believes that extending an olive branch to both men would strengthen the NPP’s unity efforts and help prepare the party for future political battles.
“With reorganisation and unity, we were able to win power again. So, I am pleading with you, let us stop the public display of support for one candidate or the other.
“If we want to unite again as a party, I stand before the national executives to say that they should extend amnesty to Paul Afoko, Alan Kyerematen, and anybody who have been suspended, for them to come back.
“When we are able to do that it will serve us well. All the persons we have suspended have relatives and friends who can augment our votes as a party,” he emphasised.
