The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has busted an illegal water connection syndicate at the Adwoa Wangara apartment located in Cantonments in Greater Accra.
This forms part of the company’s intensified efforts to clamp down on unauthorised access to its supply network.

The Communications Manager for the Accra East Region, Barima Barnie, who was part of the operation, disclosed that the apartment has been consuming water without any formal billing arrangement from GWL since its construction.
“Somebody gave us information that made us discover that Adwoa Wangara’s apartment in Cantonments had done illegal connection.
“It’s not as if they have done a bypass; it’s a complete illegal connection. Since they built the facility, we’ve not brought them a single water bill because they claim they don’t use our water,” he said.

He further outlined strict sanctions to be applied to all involved in the act and issued a strong warning to any staff members who may have been complicit.
“We want to throw this caution to our staff. If there is any staff member of Ghana Water Limited who is privy to this thievery, the stealing of water that has taken place at Adwoa Wangara’s apartment in Cantonment, that staff member should start packing their things and leave their office, because we will sack them.

“We will not just sack him, we will hand him over to the law enforcement agencies for them to use the law to work on him, to prosecute him. The management of the apartment will also be handed over to the police,” he stated.
Mr. Barnie also called on the general public to assist in exposing such practices, noting that GWCL has introduced incentives for informants while guaranteeing full confidentiality.

“We also want to plead with members of the general public. We have declared a zero tolerance for illegal connections, and we also have a handsome reward for informants, people who give us information that leads to the detection of illegal connections.
“We pledge that we will protect the identity of every single individual who graciously gives us information that enables us to uncover or discover an illegal connection,” he added.
