The National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw, has justified the assault on former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson by some thugs during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
The rerun, held in 19 polling stations on Friday, July 11, was marred by incidents of violence.
Voting at St. Peter’s Polling Station was disrupted for hours after armed men invaded the centre, assaulting several people, including journalists.
Reacting to the chaos in an interview at one of the polling stations, Dr. Bissiw said she had no sympathy for the former minister, accusing her of similar violent actions in the past.
“I condemn violence, but please don’t ask me to feel sorry for her because I’d be lying before you and before God. I don’t feel sorry one bit. She deserves it. Interview her victims and ask her,” she said.
“I’m a victim of Hawa Koomson. Ask her if I deserved the men she brought to attack me during the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election. Ask about the people they shot and killed at Kasoa, and the organiser who died. Did they deserve it? Go and ask her,” Dr. Bissiw added.
Meanwhile, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has condemned the violence that erupted during the partial rerun of the disputed parliamentary elections.
“This is not the democracy we want to see in Ghana. Our supporters are being attacked by thugs in the presence of police who have been unable to protect them. The candidate and our deputy national organiser have been attacked,” he lamented.
Dr. Bawumia, who is the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, called on the government to ensure those responsible for the violence are prosecuted.
“I call on the President and all those in charge of the country’s administration to take action and bring the perpetrators to book. This is the only way to deter such acts. Let me assure them that if they are not held accountable, we will not forget. We will make sure they are brought to justice no matter how long it takes,” he cautioned.
