Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is expected to brief Parliament today, Tuesday, July 1, 2025, on the resurgence of COVID-19 in Ghana amid renewed concerns over public health safety.
The update, scheduled for 2:00 PM at Parliament House, will provide lawmakers with a detailed overview of the country’s current COVID-19 situation, including infection rates, vaccination progress, and national preparedness. The Minister is also expected to outline new response strategies and the state of health surveillance systems across the country.
The ministerial address comes in the wake of confirmed COVID-19 cases at the University of Ghana, which announced a resurgence on campus on Monday, June 23.
In a statement released on Thursday, June 26, the university’s health directorate confirmed that both suspected and confirmed cases had been recorded, prompting the reactivation of strict health protocols and intensified monitoring.
“All staff, students, and visitors are strongly advised to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to the recommended preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection and community spread,” the statement noted.
In response to the growing concern, the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs has issued a directive suspending all planned student events and celebrations until further notice. The instruction affects student-led groups such as the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), and departmental associations.
“These measures have become necessary to safeguard the health and well-being of the University community,” the statement signed by Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen, Dean of Student Affairs, emphasized.
The University’s leadership has urged all campus-based organisations to comply fully with the directive and contribute to collective efforts to stem the spread of the virus.
With COVID-19 once again surfacing in the academic environment, today’s briefing by the Health Minister is expected to address growing anxieties and clarify Ghana’s broader containment and prevention plan.
