Here is list of media houses facing NCA shutdown

President John Dramani Mahama has taken decisive action to safeguard press freedom by ordering the immediate reinstatement of broadcast licenses for several media houses that were recently shut down by the National Communications Authority (NCA), including major players such as Asaase Radio and Wontumi FM.

The president’s directive comes in response to public uproar over what many viewed as a sweeping and heavy-handed move by the NCA, which had suspended the operations of over 60 radio stations for alleged breaches of broadcasting regulations. Critics swiftly raised red flags, warning that the clampdown risked undermining democratic freedoms and could be perceived as politically motivated censorship.

Speaking before Parliament on Thursday, June 12, the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Samuel Nartey George, confirmed that the President had instructed his ministry to collaborate with the NCA to reverse the suspensions. The affected stations, he announced, have now been given a 30-day grace period to rectify all outstanding regulatory issues and resume lawful broadcasting.

“Our fight is not against free speech. It is against lawlessness, asset misappropriation, and regulatory defiance,” the Minister declared. “I remain committed to reclaiming what rightfully belongs to the Ghanaian people and laying the foundation for a fair, modern, and technologically equipped broadcasting sector.”

The move is seen as a firm step by President Mahama to reassure the public of his administration’s commitment to upholding constitutional freedoms, while also reinforcing regulatory discipline in Ghana’s fast-evolving media landscape. It marks a recalibration of the government’s approach—balancing regulatory enforcement with democratic accountability.
