Black Stars management Committee chairman Dr. Randy Abbey has provided an update on the potential squad for the Black Stars’ upcoming Unity Cup game against Nigeria on May 28, with a number of big names set to miss out.
Ghana will participate in the four-nation tournament together with three other countries: Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobego and Jamaica.
Earlier in the week, the Black Stars’ opponents, Nigeria, revealed their squad for the clash, with African Player of the Year Ademola Lookman missing out on the team.
Galatasary forward Victor Osimhen, 2023 African Player of the Year, was also absent despite Eric Chelle naming a decent side.
Due to the ongoing European season yet to conclude for some teams and the tournament falling outside Fifa’s scheduled international calendar, Black Stars coach Otto Addo is also expected to make wholesale changes and adjustments to his side, per Black Stars management Committee chairman Randy Abbey.
“I think the coach has a list of players. You have foreign based players and some locally-based players. Some are in the first squad, there are some that are on standby just incase someone gets injured or is unable to make it,” he told 3Sports
“I think we will have quiet a good team. The only thing is that there are some players that we know and are used to that won’t be there. But it is an opportunity for others to demonstrate they have what it takes to be in the team,” he added.
The Black Stars pipped Nigeria to the 2022 World Cup after progressing on away goals following a 1-1 draw in the qualifiers.
The Super Eagles defeated Ghana last time out and will be hoping to repeat the feat.
