Operatives from Ghana’s national security apparatus conducted a dawn operation at the residence of former GIHOC Distilleries Managing Director, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, as part of a broader investigation into alleged financial misdeeds during his time in office.

The operation, which took place around 5:00 a.m., was aimed at retrieving state-owned vehicles believed to still be in Mr. Jumah’s possession. He was reportedly not at home during the search.

Mr. Jumah, a one-time appointee under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is at the center of a probe involving the acquisition and use of state vehicles, unauthorized asset sales, and questionable personnel decisions during his tenure at GIHOC.

Central to the inquiry is a Genesis G90 luxury saloon vehicle originally purchased by GIHOC for over $100,000. A 2019 letter from the company’s Board of Directors approved the vehicle’s sale to Mr. Jumah under his Conditions of Service. However, the car was sold at just 5% of its value—GHS 4,943.11—as confirmed in documentation signed by Apea Twumasi-Ankrah, the company’s Secretary and Head of Administration.

A technical inspection classified the vehicle—a 2018 model with 38,971 kilometers on the odometer and a 3,300cc engine—as being in “good” condition, with no previous maintenance issues. An independent valuation by the State Transport Corporation valued the same car at GHS 98,862.00.

Beyond this transaction, Mr. Jumah is also being investigated for retaining at least two additional vehicles, including an Audi valued at over $60,000, which were not formally authorized for purchase. Reports indicate one of these cars had been used by his son. While one of the vehicles has since been retrieved, others remain unaccounted for.

Further allegations include claims that Mr. Jumah significantly increased GIHOC’s payroll, placing undue financial strain on the company. He is also accused of authorizing the sale of GIHOC properties in Tema worth over $700,000 without the necessary board approval.

One of the vehicles has been returned to Accra by security personnel. The status of the remaining vehicles and assets is still under review.

Investigations by state agencies are ongoing, with Mr. Jumah expected to be invited for questioning in the coming days.
