A violent incident marred the parliamentary rerun at St. Peter’s Polling Station in Odorkor, Ablekuma North, as Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, the Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was viciously assaulted in broad daylight.
The attack unfolded on Friday, July 11, during the tense rerun of the December 2024 elections, when a group of unidentified men descended on the polling centre, launching a coordinated assault that disrupted voting and sent voters fleeing in panic.
A graphic video now circulating widely on social media captures the shocking moment Asamoah was mobbed, beaten, and overpowered. In the footage, he is seen trying to escape the frenzied crowd but is quickly pinned to the ground, where he is kicked, punched, and left bruised by assailants alleged to be sympathisers of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The violence brought voting to a standstill and threw the polling station into chaos. Eyewitnesses described scenes of fear and confusion as security officers struggled to contain the situation.
The NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, and former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson were also reportedly targeted in the fracas, further escalating tensions at what was already a high-stakes electoral contest.
The Electoral Commission had organised the rerun in 19 polling stations to resolve months of dispute following the December 7, 2024, elections. However, Friday’s violence has raised serious concerns about electoral security and the safety of party officials during democratic exercises.
The NPP is yet to issue an official statement on the incident, though insiders describe the attack as a “deliberate act of political violence” aimed at intimidating the party’s frontline operatives.
Meanwhile, calls are mounting for a swift police investigation and the immediate arrest of those behind the assault. Political observers warn that the rising wave of election-related violence, if unchecked, could threaten the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.
