Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says he remains optimistic about returning to win the presidency despite his defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Dr. Bawumia lost the 2024 polls to President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by a margin of 1.7 million votes.
Addressing a gathering of former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in Accra on Monday, who had declared their support for him ahead of the NPP’s next presidential primaries, Dr. Bawumia said he is inspired by Mahama’s political comeback.
“If John Mahama can come back after the 2016 defeat and win, I can also come back after 2024 and win the presidency of Ghana,” he stated.
The NPP, at its National Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, has set January 31, 2026, as the date to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 elections.
Names being speculated as likely contenders include former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and Dr. Bawumia himself.
So far, Dr. Bawumia has reportedly received endorsements from over 60 current members of the NPP Minority Caucus in Parliament and more than 200 former MMDCEs.
