Former Suame Member of Parliament and Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has revealed the reason behind his decision to step down as Majority Leader in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.
Readers may recall that the Suame MP, who had decided not to return to Parliament after the expiration of the 8th Parliament, resigned on February 21, 2024.
He was succeeded by his then Deputy, Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central Region, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
At the time, many in the party disagreed with the move and argued that the veteran lawmaker should have been allowed to complete his term before a new leader was appointed.
However, speaking on Asempa FM on Tuesday, March 4, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu disclosed that he had been informed about the President’s intention to replace him with Afenyo-Markin due to regional considerations.
This, he said, was because the NDC was seemingly gaining ground in the region, especially with the nomination of Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
The former MP said he willingly stepped down to prevent the move from causing division in the party, which was at the time focused on breaking the 8-year governance cycle.
“I didn’t want to be the eye of any storm in the party. I felt I had had enough, so I decided to resign, and I said it there and then,” he explained.
