If I could play one more game, it would be against Uruguay – Asamoah Gyan reveals

Asamoah Gyan’s unfinished business with Uruguay is an open secret.

Back in 2010, Fernando Muslera and Uruguay stood in the way of Gyan and African football history.

A goal for Gyan and Ghana will have undoubtedly won their World Cup quarter-final tie against Uruguay 2-1, to become the first-ever African nation to make the semi-finals of the World Cup.

However, Asamoah Gyan, who had previously scored two penalties in the 2010 World Cup against Serbia and Australia, failed to convert from 12 yards.

His shot cannoned off the frame of the bar and into the skies at the Soccer City Stadium, South Africa, sending shockwaves down the spines of African football fanatics. That moment has lived with Gyan till date.

Uruguay went on to finish the tournament in fourth place, behind winners Spain, runners-up Netherlands and bronze medalist Germany.

12 years after that pulsating encounter, Ghana had the opportunity to rewrite their wrongs against Uruguay at the 2022 World Cup, but the Black Stars fell flat, losing 2-0.

Going through the full cycle of emotions, Ghana’s all-time leading top scorer, Asamoah Gyan, revisited the incident from 2010 while speaking on Tv3’s NewDay.

“If I could play one more game, it would be against Uruguay,” he said.

“My most emotional moment on the pitch was when the final whistle went against Uruguay. Not when I missed the penalty, after the penalty shootout,” he added.

Asamoah Gyan ended his international career in 2019 with 51 goals for Ghana.

In 2023, Gyan called time on his career, spanning two decades, winning a host of individual and team honours.
