The NDC must not take Ghanaians for granted. Just as we stood against the NPP’s reckless political decisions, we will do the same if the NDC attempts to mismanage public funds.
What is the justification for this so-called Hajj Village Project, and how is it any different from the wasteful National Cathedral that never materialized? Let it be clear—the NDC should not assume we have gone to sleep. We don’t need divine intervention to know that this project will be funded by the state and that it must be stopped immediately.
I have always maintained that government sponsorship of religious obligations is inappropriate. It is a complete waste of state resources. How can we justify spending public funds on religious pilgrimages when we cannot even afford to hold our annual Independence Day celebrations due to financial constraints? I would be utterly disappointed to hear that the government is still sponsoring people to Mecca this year.
Ghana is a secular state, and no religion should be placed above another. If the NDC is embarking on this project, will they also construct a national shrine for traditionalists? This is unacceptable.
It is far too early for the NDC to start on this misguided path. Some of us will not hesitate to speak our minds on issues like this. If the NDC truly believes that the NPP destroyed the economy through reckless spending, then why engage in the same wasteful projects? Have we even begun solving the pressing issues facing this country?
Students are still learning under trees, sitting on broken chairs, and struggling with poor infrastructure. Many communities continue to battle with animals for muddy drinking water. Our roads are in deplorable condition, and several areas remain without electricity. These are the real issues that need attention, not a project that benefits only a select group of Ghanaians. We resisted the National Cathedral for these very reasons, and the NDC cannot convince us that all these problems have been solved.
The NDC must act wisely or risk returning to opposition faster than they came into office. No political party can take Ghanaians for granted anymore. We are watching closely, especially President Mahama. He must fulfill his promises and work towards improving the country instead of engaging in the same reckless spending that led to the NPP’s downfall.
Both the NPP and the NDC must understand that Ghanaians are now more discerning than ever. We will not sit back and allow any government to put the nation’s finances at risk with unnecessary projects. The NDC must tread carefully and focus on the real priorities of the people.
Ghanaians are watching!
