The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has dispatched a special investigative team to Asawase to help unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing of the Kusasi Chief, Abdul-Malik Azenbe.
The late chief, who also served as the Kaadi Divisional Area Chief in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region, was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday, 22 July 2025, in what authorities suspect was a targeted attack.
Speaking to the bereaved family, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, assured them that the police are working tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“We have already launched thorough investigations, and I assure you that we will hunt down and arrest those responsible,” DCOP Teye-Cudjoe said. He added that all necessary protocols have been completed, and the chief’s body will be released for burial.
The Regional Commander also appealed to the media to report responsibly on the matter and allow the family the privacy to mourn their loss.
Details of the Attack
A police statement revealed that the assailants, riding separate motorbikes, approached the chief at close range and opened fire before speeding away. The victim was initially rushed to the Manhyia District Hospital and later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His body has since been deposited at the Ebenezer Mortuary in Tafo for autopsy.
DCOP Teye-Cudjoe, together with the Regional Crime Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ebenezer Boyor, led a team of officers to the crime scene. During their inspection, two spent shells, believed to have been fired from an AK-47 rifle, were retrieved as evidence.
