IGP Yohuno under scrutiny as violence mars Ablekuma North rerun

The competence of the current Inspector General of Police has been questioned after the violence that marred the rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

To many, the Police failed constituents who voted in the 19 polling stations, considering the number of violent clashes recorded on the day of the election.

Analysts have said that the Police looked unprepared for the task and watched on while thugs and hoodlums took the law into their own hands on the day.

What is even worrying is the fact that the Police were also involved in perpetrating violence on innocent Ghanaians going about their duties.

There is a growing concern that if the Police cannot handle just 19 polling stations, then the worst will be expected in Akwatia, where a whole constituency will be voting in the by-election.

Mussa Danquah, a pollster, acknowledged in a Facebook post that the former Inspector General of Police has been missed, considering the events of the day.

His post read “Dampare will be missed. The police has failed”.

Kofi Asare of Africa Education Watch had similar sentiments to express. To him, the security of the people in Akwatia will be under threat, considering the failure of the Police in Ablekuma North.

He said, “If Ghana Police Service can’t protect citizens in just 19 polling stations, how can they protect us in the entire Akwatia Constituency? Terrible Security! Disgusting!”.

Steve Manteaw, a policy analyst, urged the IGP to act amid the violence that characterised the election.
