The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has raised serious concerns over the destruction of his mining concession by illegal miners, describing the situation as alarming.

Expressing his frustration, he lamented that despite government interventions to combat illegal mining, the problem remains widespread, causing severe environmental and economic damage.

During a meeting with the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources on Friday, February 14, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stressed the urgent need for stronger measures to tackle the issue.

He called for a comprehensive strategy that includes deploying security forces to safeguard mining concessions, formalizing small-scale mining operations, and creating alternative employment opportunities for those involved in illegal mining.

He revealed that illegal miners had taken control of his concession at Akropong without his knowledge, further underscoring the scale of the crisis.

“The site that was given to me has been invaded by illegal miners. Meanwhile, I had plans to give it out for proper mining. We must find a way to solve this crisis,” he stated.

He added, “These children who are engaged in galamsey need jobs. We need to assist them so they don’t go back to the sites.”
